| Here are some helpful tips that will make your new dog's transition into your home easier for you and your new pet. 1) Brings towels and/or a crate when you pick up your new pet. 2) Spend some time with the animal before you load him or her into the vehicle. Let the animal meet you first. 3) Before bringing your new dog inside, let him/her explore outside and get to know their new home. 4) Remember that your new pet may not have ever been inside a house before. This could be a frighting thing for him/her. Let them take their time going inside. You make need to coax them inside. 5) Show your new pet around the house and where they will sleep and eat. 6) Add boiled potatoes to his/her food. This will prevent diarrhea associated with changing their food. 7) Be consistent. Your new pet will have to learn a new set of rules. Establish yourself as Alpha and teach your pet the rules in a consistent manner. Use positive re-enforcement to train your pet. 8) Remember that the dog does not know what is going on. He/she is probably wondering why they have lost another home and who these strange people are. He/she may have lived on the streets before or they may have come from an abusive home. It may take two weeks before the dog settles in. Be patient and try to see things from the dog's point of view. |
